Total refurbishment of 1970’s food and drug testing facility of approximately 3600m2 in the Dammam Harbour on the East Coast of Saudi Arabia. The SFDA operate food test facilities at all the major import points in Saudi Arabia. The Dammam facility serves the busy import harbour of Dammam.
The refurbishment of the project involved the complete redesign of the facility including all laboratories and associated services.
The building contains a number of chemical and microbiology labs including testing for pathogens, dioxins and PCR Labs as well as testing for heavy metals, mycotoxins, pesticide residues, antibiotics, hormones, and melamine.
The building also contains a dedicated food testing laboratory that measures radionuclide levels in food in conjunction with biological, chemical contaminations to ensure that all foods imported into the country are within the World Food and Health recommended safe guidelines.
The narrow and slender proportions of the building posed several challenges with regard to the internal circulation of test samples, staff and waste removal. These challenges were al overcome through the application of RKD’s practical experience and innovative design solutions.
